I am renting an apartment in Paris for 9 nights. The leasing agent left me the impression that renters insurance is mandatory in Paris. The reason I am confused is that he referred me to an insurance company that sells a combined travel and renters policy?
Hi Pat,
... You should have no problem finding insurance and insurance answers on the Internet ... before you leave Mt. Joy ... just www.google.com...
bon voyage, ...P
Pat....while some owners may require that you take out insurance, it is not a legal requirement that renters in France assume that cost. We have rented apartments several times in Paris and have never been asked to pay "renter's insurance." Insurance should be the responsibility of the owner, not the renter....renter's insurance as we know it is to cover the belongings of those who rent apartments, etc, and don't own a home, but the building they live in is insured by the owners. I doubt the Paris apartment owner would be able to get away with not having insurance themselves. Depending on what they plan to charge you, I'd contact the agent and demand a better explanation....or look for different accommodations.
We rented an apartment in Paris in January and initially we were told that we were required to have renters insurance, When we questioned further we found that it wasn't required so we didn't purchase it and had no problems.
What ended up happening re: renter's insurance?
