Rental in France, VBRO, am I safe wiring $, info, etc?.

Wiring money to a swiss bank account, giving all of our passport information. It just doesn't feel completely safe. Has anyone had any bad experiences or should I just relax?

Wayne, I have used VRBO and Homelidays many times and never had a problem. But you have to use Caveat Emptor; how long has the place been in the rental pool? does it have plenty of good customer references?

There has been reports of people "spoofing" rentals: the rental agecies do not vett each applicant. But if you do your homework you should be safe. Yes, I too get nervous each time that I have to move money on a wire transfer, so I prefer to find rentals that will allow me to use my VISA, or PayPal.

I agree with Steve, make sure that you have a good Trip Insurance policy that covers you, "just-in-case."

We have been renting apartments in Europe for the last 4 years from a variety of agencies and have always had a good experience. The Slow Travel and Slow Europe websites have reviews of many apartments in many European countries, if reading reviews will help you feel more secure. Renting apartments is the best way to really experience what the county is like. I would never go back to staying totally in hotels....
