Rental car versus train or bus in Brittany and Normandy

I benefitted from the question posed by Will in Kirkland and answered by Frank in Laguna Beach. I plan ti take the train from Paris to Caen, rent a car and drive to Bayeux, stay there four nights, drive to Mont St. Michel, continue to Rennes and back to Caen. I would also like to see Rouen. Would it be wise to leave the car in Caen and take the train to Rouen, stay there two nights and then take the train to Paris. Or would it be better to drive from Rennes to Rouen and stay there two nights and the return to Caen to drop the car and then take the train from Caen to Paris?

You may be under the assumption that you will have to pay extra to drop your rental off in a different city than where you get it. in France there generally is no such penalty. So it's not necessary to return to Caen for that reason.

You might consider taking the train to Rennes, renting a car there, and then driving to Mt St Michel, Caen, Bayeux, and Rouen, where you could return the car and take a train to Paris. Or reverse the order.

Thank you for responding to my e-mail. I am not going to try to drive in Rouen and it would be expensive to have a car and pay to park it. What car rental did you use? Did they charge a drop off fee, if you pick up in one town and drop it in another?

I recommend www.autoeurope.com, a consolidator that finds you the best deal from among the companies with which it has contracts. Call their US toll-free number and ask about any special deals that don't appear on the Web site. No, you will not have to pay a drop-off fee so long as your pick up point and your drop off point are both in France.

FYI, the AutoEurope site lists Bayeux as a pickup/drop off point.
