I would like to rent a car in Salzburg, Austria and drive West to tour and photo the Alps and turn the rental car in in Zurich, Switzerland before flying home (8-days of driving in March). Is this permitted and is there a $ reasonable rental company/method to reserve this?
It can be done, but you are likely to find that the drop-off fee for dropping in a country other than where you rented will be prohibitively expensive. Better to rent in Austria while driving in Austria, then drop the rental in Austria, cross the border by bus or train, then re-rent in Switzerland.
Check AutoEurope online for prices. They are rental car brokers that will arrange for your car with companies such as Europcar, Hertz, or Avis. Kemwel also arranges for cars. I prefer to finalize my rental by calling AutoEurope. Note that they do have a AAA discount.
Thank you for the great suggestion to cross the boarder on train then rent another car in next country (if this is significantly less expensive)!
Thanks for the suggestion to check with AutoEurope for a good auto rental value and for the tip on the AAA discount!
