Rental Car in Logroño

Hi all,

I have just booked some bodega visitations in and around Rioja Alvesa and now and faced with having to book a car for a couple of days. The problem is that they seem to be INCREDIBLY expensive.... (I guess I won't be asking for extras like automatic transmission or a GPS)! I have been an expat for 6 years and would prefer those little extras as I don't regularly drive.

Anyway, does anyone know how it is I can find a good deal? Do I have to rent for a whole week? I was thinking of picking it up and dropping it off in the same place - Logroño (wherever the bus lets me off from Madrid). Also, do I need an IDP if my license is a valid Canadian driver's license?

I guess it depends on what you consider "incredibly" expensive. Usually, renting by the week will save you a considerable amount of money, but if you're travelling during the high season, don't expect many deals. The firm I use in Spain, carjet.co.uk, is a broker that covers a number of firms. It's showing the lowest weekly rental from Madrid (manual) at about $450 CAD, and the lowest automatic at $1000. You may be able to put in a request with the actual rental firm once you book, but there are usually no guarantees. I got an auto last fall even though I hadn't booked one. Rates aren't any lower for nearby places like Zaragoza, Bilbao, or Vitoria.
You might also want to keep an eye on the "excess value," the residual vehicle value, or deductible, that you are responsible for in the event of an accident. It usually ranged between about 550 and 800 Euro. You can purchase extra insurance to bring that deductible down to zero. Driving from Madrid to La Rioja is easy, with motorways in place most of the way.
If you're still looking for a place to stay during your wine route trip, check out the Hotel Villa de Abalos in the village of Abalos. It's an old mansion turned into a magnificent B and B....Jose Luis and his young family will take great care of you. It's a tiny village and, sitting in the town's only coffee shop for a couple of hours will let you see the entire crew of bodega workers traipse through.
If you plan to bring some wine back, buy it there...it's cheaper in La Rioja than outside. And check for Azpilicueta, the finest red Rioja I have ever tasted....unfortunately, not available here in Ontario.
Finally, on a more prosaic note, yes, an IDP is required for Spain, to go along with your regular driver's license.

Thanks a lot for the advice... and actually, I am just being a baby - the only two cars I have ever owned were both stick shifts! So I am definitely unwilling to pay the kind of extra needed for an automatic. I just thought that it would be better given that I haven't driven regularly since I left Canada (when I was 20... I am 39 now).

And THANKS for the Carjet tip. It was cheaper than the sites I had checked which were asking for well over 100 Euros a day. With Carjet, pick up and drop off in Logroño for 3 days is $209.16 USD (166 Euros) for ESN01 Citroen C2 3dr. It says 4GBP per day for top up (which I assume is insurance).

Yes, the top up will cover the excess value, plus several other things that aren't usually covered by insurance, like wheel damage and punctures, glass breakage, and lost keys. However, since this is offered by Carjet, you may still have a hold put on your CC by the car rental company...and if there's an accident or damage, they'll charge you for it, and you'll seek reimbursement from Carjet. Check the details to make sure you have ALL the information necesssary should you need to file a claim...police report, etc. Many Visa cards offer similar protection, so you may want to check to see if yours does.
