Renfe web site: A real clustershag!

Here's an update I hope helps every other poor Americano attempting to use the RENFE web site to purchase train tickets for traveling in Spain.

After approximately 6-hours of on-line dithering -- the RENFE web site is a true "designed-by-a-committee-of- idiots" success story, and three phone conversations w/RENFE customer service agents -- including one confrence call w/our credit card rep and a Renfe Manager we were told: We cannot purchase RENFE tickets on-line with a credit card from an American Bank. We tried, AMEX and VISA.

We were given two options:

1) Wait unrtil we get to Spain and purchase the tickets at the train station. Very risky and would cancil out any early purchase discounts available.

2) Purchase the tickets at a travel agency. The Manager couldn't provide the name of any American travel agencies RENFE works with. Yeah, right!

We went to Plan B.

We went to RAILEUROPE and purchased the desired tickets in 5-minutes.

No muss, no fuss and although the tickets cost a bit more, we've got 'em!

Hope this is of assistance to all of you frustrated Yanks who've attempted to run the RENFE guantlet without much success.

Too bad Tom....many of us haven't had these sorts of problems with the website.....yours is the first I've heard of this nature. Their statement that you cannot purchase on-line with an American credit card is simply not correct....probably a catch-all excuse to having to actually fix a particular problem, unless they've made some sort of change in the past couple of weeks.

I had very similar problems and posted them here a couple of weeks ago. I never did manage to get my Capital One Visa to work, but my wife's Mastercard did work on their website. I also tried asking for help via e-mail on their website, but they never replied. I didn't have the energy to call them to try to work it out, but at least I've got my tickets now. Oh, but this post was worth it if only for my new phrase - clustershag! It sounds ever so more dignified than, ummm, you know...;-)

Thanks, Tom LOL!

PS - Buying rail tickets from their European sites can be a bit 'trying'; next time, maybe it'll work better - there's a lot of ebb-and-flow in these things...
