Even after calling credit card co. to allow purchase, getting message that "sorry" but cannot go any further with this purchase on last page. Trying to get Web price and very frustrated - don't want to lose opportunity for reduced rate. HELP!
Keep trying ;) You may have encoutered them doing maintenance. WHat dates/routes are you travelling?
Hi Bruce: I had the same issues...and I agree, keep trying. RENFE only accepts VISA/MC (so if you are trying Amex or Dis forget it). I finally had success by purchasing my tickets in Spanish (you can go through the site in English and make a note of the fields if you don't understand any Spanish). Make sure you've called your CC to have them "unblock" you. Be persistent (it's good training for a trip to Europe in general!). I snagged the discounted prices, and they were worth the trouble. (As difficult as RENFE is, they have nothing on the Italian train company, which is truly horrible--had to fax them a copy of my passport and wait two weeks so they'd let me buy tickets).
they also apparently don't accept debit cards, which I learned the hard way. I missed the 60% discount by "that much"!!! literally. but, I did get the next one down, the 40% off discount. It's cantankerous but well worth the discounted fares as long as you are persistent.
Thanks to all...problem solved with persistence. Got email from renfe stating they were having trouble with their server and sent their apologies. Thanks again.
