RENFE AVE or Avant

Will be travelling from Malaga to Cordoba for a day trip, I have a choice of an AVE train that takes 50 mins or a Avant that takes about 15 longer (ie, an hour and five minutes) which is half the price.

My questions:-

Is there a difference between the AVE and the Avant once onboard? Is the AVE worth the extra $?

Can I get a discounted ticket on this route (Malaga - Corboda - Malaga? If so, where can I buy the tickets assuming advance purchase is necessary.

Steve, thanks for the reply. I have looked at Renfe.com and all that I can understand is that I save a few cents by buying a web fare. Am I doing something wrong, I thought train tickets were heavily discounted if I buy in advance. I have check a few travel dates over the past week and don't see any change in fares, I am wondering if this is not discounted by RENFE.

Oh boy, what am I doing wrong, I looked up prices again and I am getting the following prices,
Malaga to Cordoba, AVE, stn price 44.40 euros, internet price, 44.70 euros.
Malaga to Cordoba, Avant, stn price and internet price are the same, 21.20 euros.

I did check a few dates between 7 and 8 weeks from now.

Also, regarding the Seat 61 website, I see nothing about the Avant trains there is some information about the AVE and other types of trains, but not the Avant, am I missing something?

At www.renfe.es, click on "Welcome" to get the English page, then click on "purchase" towards the top right. That'll list the various fares once you input your info. The ones marked with a little "W" icon are the best deals...web fares at 60% off. The Star icon is Estrella fares, at 40% off,....then the regular fares. Book up to 62 1/2 days in advance for the best deals....they can sell out quickly, especially on this popular route.
The only difference between the AVE and the Avant is that the Avant train stops at a couple of locations along the way...the AVE does not.
You can get an even better deal on the Arco train...but it takes a lot longer, follows the old train track route, and makes several stops....a "milk train," if you will.

Thanks Norm.

It's too early for me to purchase tickets since my travel dates are more than 62 days away, but I did check fares for 58-62 days from now to get an idea. There are some estrella fares, but only for a few trains that depart in the afternoon, which would not be feasible for a day trip.

Looks like I'm out of luck.
