Trying to decide to do a daytrip from Paris to Reims.
We like Champagne but is wouldn't be the main reason for going. I was more interested in the history. Is there enough to there? Thank you.
It would essentially be a trip to see a cathedral. Chartres would be a better place for that since it's probably the best of the notre dame style. For a day trip with a good cathedral and a bunch of history, consider Rouen (death of Joan d'Arc, burial place of Lionheart's heart, cathedral repeatedly painted by Monet).
Chartres is a wonderful day trip. The cathedral is spectacular and the small town is enchanting. If you go to Reim, rent a car and also visit Laon. Its cathedral is at least as interesting as Reim and the town is similar to Chartres.
If you have any interest at all in WWII history the Museum of the Surrender is in Reims where the Germans officially surrendered to General Eisenhower. The room has been left as it was on that day.
The champagne caves are very interesting as they were created by the Romans in the 2nd century AD.
Also the Notre Dame cathedral in Reims is just beautiful and you won't have to visit with the masses of people that you find in Paris at the Notre Dame.
Since you can now get there in 45 on the TGV, it is definitely worth the trip.
