Reim Cathedral closed?

We were planning an overnight in Reims in Sept. to break up a long drive. A couple at a party who had just been in France told us that the cathedral is under construction and closed, not to bother stopping. I see no mention of this and wonder if this is true? Any suggestions for an small place to stay? Thanks!

Sharon, I can't find ANYTHING that refers to the cathedrale being closed, nor the Basilique Saint-Remi (worth seeing! ~1 mi away) There is scheduled work being done on the front through the end of the year, but NOTHING on its being closed. I even read the church website (in French). It was talking about events happening there now...so apparently, the couple either saw the scaffolding and assumed it was closed, tried to enter but it was too late in the day, or they're confused on the location. You look good to go. But, you never know...If you can, also go to the Museum of the Surrender/Musee de la Reddition. You'll need to research the times and days open...

When were they in France? I am surprised because there were major works for 3 years a while ago but it re-opened in 2005, and the cathedral is normally open from 7.30 am to 7.30 pm. In 2011 they will have special 800th anniversary celebrations.
Also, usually in September, they open the upper parts of the cathedral and guided tours at given times of the day. This said, Reims is a beautiful city with a lot to be seen beside its cathedral. One other place you should visit is the Palais du Tau, a must!

One more thought - to be on the safe side, you could email the tourist office in Reims so they could confirm whether there are works there or not. Here is their email address: [email protected]

Thanks for all the feedback! The couple who told us this were just there in the last 2 weeks and apparently were wrong. I'm glad I checked in to it with everyone here, and we will be sure and stop there to break up the drive back to Amsterdam. If anyone knows of lodging in Reims please let me know. Thanks!!
