Regensburg...What's there?

I saw Regensburg mentioned in another post. What is there to see? We like smaller quaint towns and I saw some pictures and it looked like a picturesque town. True? I think I read somewhere that it is on the glass (crystal?) road. Is that right? If so, are there places to go to see this? Other thought?

The center of Regensburg, the historic area, is an easy place to wander around in for a day or two. It is pretty flat terrain, with lots of small shops, cobblestone alleys, etc. There is a bit of the original Roman wall to be seen, called the Porta Praetoria. You could visit the gothic cathedral (St. Peter's ) on a Sunday morning to hear their famous boys choir, called the Domspatzen. You could tour the Schloss Thurn und Taxis, former home of the family that founded the German postal system. There is also another church, St. Emmeram, with a famous frescoed ceiling. If you are into art, know the name Asam, it is worth a stop. If the weather is good, you can walk across the Danube on the old stone bridge already mentioned, and walk along the other side, which is also nice for a different view. Good Christmas market town in winter, too.
Not far from the sausage place, there is a place that makes a traditional steamed dumpling, called a Dampfnudel. Hope its still there. If you are looking for an interesting, somewhat quirky place to stay, I liked Hotel D'Orphee in the old town. It has a turn-of-the-century Paris feel to it. Very clean, and with alot of character.

There is a lot of information (in English if you click the American flag) about Regensburg on the town website, www.regensburg.de. Under accommodations, you will find place with URLs and email so you can book yourself.

We are very fond of Regensburg. Wikipedia does a decent job of explaining the history and the sights. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regensburg After you visit the Gothic Cathedral go a couple blocks to visit the Alte Kapelle, which was modernized in the Baroque Age. It is good comparison of styles. Near by are the stone bridge (~1140) and the Porta Praetoria, or roman gate. St Emmeram's was great for me. My wife like her tour of the co-located Schloß Thurn and Taxis; it is still the residence of the princess of that family. Perhaps best of all is wandering through the many alley ways and squares of the old town. Find one of the many cafes. There are modern stores for shopping as well. A good middle class hotel is the Weidenhof, which is located in the pedestrian zone, not far from the train station. Regards, Gary
