My husband and I will be in Regensburg, Germany at the end of Sept./beginning of October. My husband has a conference there so we plan to use Regensburg as a base. We think Regensburg will be lovely and plan to spend a couple of days exploring there. The area doesn't get much coverage and I'm wondering about day trips from Regensburg. We may have to visit Munich as a day trip if Octoberfest prevents our finding affordable lodgings there for a couple of days. If anyone has any ideas in addition to Munich, I'd really appreciate your sharing them with me. Thank you, Velda
Nurnburg is very close to Regensburg, and well worth the visit. Although the city is, unfortunately, best known in the English speaking world for its Nazi association, the old town really is a delight.
In addition to Nürnberg, I would suggest you might head the other way, down the Danube, to Passau (www.passau.de). Lovely town at the confluence of three rivers, the Danube, the Inn (which starts in Switzerland near St. Moritz), and the smaller Ilz.
Another trip, somewhat longer, but would allow you to brag about somewhere that your friends have never heard of, is Burghausen (www.burghausen.de). Burghausen is on the Inn, just across from Austria, and boasts "the longest castle in Germany".
Any of these can be made as a day trip from Regensburg for €19 RT for one person, €27 RT for up to five people, with a Bayern-Ticket.
We spent 10 days in Regensburg a couple of years ago when my husband was there on business. It is a lovely area, and we wandered extensively in town. We bought Lander tickets to go into Munich on his day off. The cathedral is lovely, and I enjoyed the painted cathedral/art museum behind it as well. There is a lovely biergarten across the street from the two churches. We went to a couple of German monument type things that were in the area, there was a castle ruin that I didn't make it up to, It was a lovely place -- felt very much like Prague, definitely NOT ful of Americans.
Velda: I'm planning a trip to Germany and Regensburg is one of my destinations. While there I'm taking a 3-hour river cruise from Regensburg to the Walhalla Temple which lies along the banks of the Danube. The boats depart from the Old Stone Bridge in Regensburg and are relatively inexpensive.
If you have decided to stay in Regensburg then I would like to tell you that it is really a nice option. Regensburg is really a tourist friendly city and here you can enjoy your holidays.
I have visited Regensburg couple of times and it was really lovely experience. St Peters Cathedral, Old Stone Bridge are really awesome tourist destinations to visit. Sorat Insel Hotel is a best accommodation option in Regensburg. This Hotel is located in the middle of Danube river and you can enjoy amazing view of Danube River at the time of Sunset. I have written some content about Regensburg city. Please have a look at the link below. http://www.joguru.com/regensburg-germany
Regensburg is gorgeous. You can easily spend a couple days just there.
I decided to visit Regensburg this summer after reading about it in earlier Helpline posts. (Edit: This was probably one of them!) Regensburg has one of the largest and authenically old old-towns I have seen anywhere. There's lots of German tourists, and we encountered quite a few daytripping American and Japanese boatpeople, but the place just did not seem crowded or touristy (i.e., row on row of tacky souvenir shops). That is definitely one place I want to return to and spend more time in. But I am not sure RS should pay more attention to it. The Rick Steves seal of approval can be the kiss of death for a town. Maybe we should just keep it to ourselves and not spread the word in Rick's guidebooks. :>)
... or respond to threads that concerned a trip taken almost 5 years ago.
Shoot, I would go to Regensburg just to get the chance to see the Japanese boatpeople. What a rarity!
Don't forget the American boatpeople!
Hello and thank you to all who have replied recently to my past post. Regensburg was a delight when we were there in the Fall of 2008. It was also wonderful when we returned for 5 days in the Spring of 2011. It's a beautiful city that is perfect for walking and just enjoying being there. The boys' choir was really special and I went on a tour of the old town which was very nice and informative. We also had some lovely drives thru the surrounding countryside. In 2011 we even saw a Falconry show at an old castle about an hour away. It was mentioned in my Lonely Planet guide and was a great experience. If my husband has another conference in Regensburg, I will be happy to spend another few days there. All the best, Velda
