Regensburg

My mother-in-law has been to Regensburg, Germany and absolutely loved it. It is north-northeast of Munich about 60 miles. It's the gateway to the Bavarian Natrual Forest. Has anyone else been there? What are some of your experiences.

We visited Regensburg the last two years and originally in 1987. It gets two stars in the Michelin Green Guide if you want to read their professional opinion.

It has a large gothic cathedral, a medieval stone bridge over the Danube, Roman ruins and a maze of streets with medieval buildings. My wife really enjoyed the tour of the Thurn and Taxis Palace, still occupied by its aristocratic family. I was a big fan of just walking the extensive, historical pedestrian zone and river front. We both liked the city museum devoted to its history. The pedestrian zone also had ample shopping areas.

My wife and I were going to separate as she wanted to shop and I preferred to sightsee along the river. She said she would meet me at the square with a church. I had to laugh as Regensburg is filled with squares with churches.

In my opinion, it is the feeling of the place that is its greatest asset. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight and yet alive to the modern world.

Jarrod, I visited Regensburg for the day. However, it was almost 20 years ago so I don't remember many details. I did like the city and I was visiting some friends who were living in Germany and they took me there because they really liked Regensburg.

My husband and I spent about two weeks there last year (hubby working in Neutraubling). We had a great time, even with the pope in town during our stay. The town is beautiful, the people very approachable, and not overrun with tourists (well, except for the thousands of people to see the pope, but they all went home). There isn't a lot to do, a few churches and a beautiful river, but you can ride bikes through the countryside and just "be German" for a while.

My husband and I will be touring the BMW factory while we are visiting Regensburg for the day in October. You need a reservation in advance. We also spent a day in Regensburg during a Christmas market cruise a few years ago. We enjoyed just walking the town and we had a city tour which was interesting.
