recommended places to visit in Provence

Have 5 days to visit other places besides Paris. Are Nimes, Arles, or Avigion good choices to see. Are they near to each other to make day trips. Which is the most economical for hotels.Sort of thinking to stay in Nimes then take day trips to the others.Any suggestions?

Mary ...Will you have a car? I think Provence is best seen from a car . While the large cities you mentioned are nice, there are many more atmosheric places to see. We are staying in Isle sur la Sorgue. It is close to the Luberon Villages and the Cotes do Rhone villages. We can drive to both. Also you can rent bikes there and take a train to the bigger places and there are winery tours there too. The Hotel Nevons is very economical and the are great little patisseries and cafes and a SPAR grocery.

Hi Mary, Nimes, Arles, and Avignon are good choices. But don't miss Pont du Gard. We stay in Beaucaire; a nice small town on the river and canal and centrally located. The village of Les Baux de Provence is interesting and worth seeing.

We recently spent a few days in Aix en Provence and really enjoyed it, especially the Saturday market.

Mary.. I am the person who told you about Isle-sur la Sorgue. If you have a Rick Steves France Book , it will tell you all about it.It is on the train and bus route. You can take a mini van tour of the villages , bike, hike etc. You would have to reserve the minivan tour in advance. This small town is known the world over for its antiques. Most shops open on the weekend and it is known for its Sunday food and antique market. The Hotel Nevons is cheap and nice. It is only 30 minutes by bus or train from Avignon. It is called the Venice of Provence because of its canals, and waterwheels. You can even have them take you and bikes to a location and you taxi there and take a bike back.
