Recommendations to see in Rhein area

All,

Thanks for all your help in replying to my earlier posts. It is great and my trip is nearing and I am all excited.

My itenerary and booking is all set. I will be reaching Bacharach from Salzburg on june 24th (6 PM) and staying in Bacharach. Will be leaving to frankfurt on June 27th morning to fly out.

I want to do Burg Eltz one day and another day cruise on the Rhein.

Questions:
- My family is not really keen on seeing Rhenfels castle (ruins) in St. Goar, especially because it is a ruin. I have a 13 year old..not sure it will interest her. Is it a must see?
- Is Marksburg better to see than Rhenfels, if I have to choose one?
- By doing the cruise and seeing the castle cover the entire day or can I include Koln to see the church.
- This is much difficult for me to decide - Is it better to buy lander ticket and k-d ticket and do koln/river cruise or just buy round trip k-d ticket and visit st.goar, and castle. I think the latter is cheaper. Any thoughts?

Much appreciate your response in advance.

Thank you
Sundar

Hi VK,

I just want to comment on Marksburg castle. It's one of the best castles we've seen. A fantastic, original medieval castle. A "must see" if in the area in my opinion.

Just a note: We thought Burg Eltz is the best castle we've seen. Marksburg is a very close second.

The Marksburg is pretty well preserved as it was lived in hundreds of years ago. I enjoyed it.

I think I enjoyed Rheinfel (note spelling) more because of the intricacy of the defenses. If you are going to see Burg Eltz, Marksburg might be redundant, or vise versa.

If you are starting in Bacharach, I would go down (NW) the river past the Pfalzgraphenstein and the Loreley to St. Goarshausen. St. Goarshausen is on the right bank of the river across from St. Goar. The boat will stop at St. Goarshausen either right before or right after St. Goar. Then take the train from St. Goarshausen to Braubach, or, if you really like boat rides that much, you could stay on the boat to Braubach, but it's a long ride.

I don't think you should try to do Köln in the same day. After Bacharach, take the train into Koblenz and then back to Bacharach.

Depending on how many of you there are, and how far you plan to be on the boat, local point-point tickets could be your best bet. The VRM (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel) sells a Minigruppenkarte, a day ticket for unlimited rides for 5 people on regional trains and buses for the transit district for €20. But Bacharach is not in the VRM (Oberwesel is), so you would have to buy tickets from Oberwesel to Bacharach. The Rheinland-Pfalz ticket is only €28, and covers the entire area. You might find it more desirable to just buy the RL-P ticket instead of both the VRM ticket and individual tickets to Bacharach.

BTW, the Rheinland-Pfalz ticket will cover you down to Bonn (and back to Bacharach), but you would need to buy local tickets from Bonn to Köln and back.
