Recommendations for Normandy, France?

My husband and I want to rent an apartment/cottage in Normandy for 1-2 weeks in September. Any suggestions for a central rental location? Also, suggestions for sites in addition to the normal WWII memorials, Bayeux, Caen, Mt. St. Michel?

I would use Caen as a central location. Here's a little map I created for you on Google.

For Caen, I would recommend visiting the castle of Guillaume le Conquerant (William the Conqueror) and the Abbaye aux Dames et Abbaye aux Hommes. For Bayeux, I would be sure to see the famous Tapisserie de Bayeux, which is more embroidery than tapestry. As for Mont-Saint-Michel, visit the abbey.
