recommendations for hotels in Madrid, Seville, Toledo, Lisbon and Porto

Anybody out there have absolutely wonderful places to recommend for 50+ couple traveling to Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Lisbon and Porto? We don't need wild nightlife - just a really comfortable, clean place to put up our feet after a long day of walking!! Many thanks.

In Madrid, I stay at the Cruz Sol Hostal (not hostel), on Plaza Santa Cruz, about 100 meters from Plaza Mayor and about 300 meters from Sol...but it's off the main route between the two, so it's very quiet. Very comfortable, with all rooms looking out onto the street or Plaza. Get one of the two larger rooms with bathroom included....yes, there is an elevator:). 52 Euro per night. www.hostalcruzsol.com/index.english.html. In Sevilla, I love the little Hostal Redes, about 50 Euros per night for a double with shower. It's about a 15 minute walk down Calle Alfonso XII from the start of all the pedestrian malls in the center of the city. It's quiet and secure...and they'll do your laundry in 24 hours, cheap!

We are a 60+ couple and very much liked the Hotel Britannia in Lisbon and Hotel Pinto El Greco in Toledo. We found all our lodgings for Spain in Alistair Sawday's Special Places to Stay: Spain, and they were all wonderful. (Now on the web at www.specialplacestostay.com) One note of caution: our trip was in 2001 when the dollar was pretty strong. These places may now seem quite pricey.

I had good luck at Hotel Simon in Sevilla in 2003. Quiet, relatively clean, nice architecture, and only 2 blocks from the cathedral in a convenient, safe neighborhood. In 2003 it was 44 Euro/night. Sevilla is a wonderful town - enjoy!
