Recommendations for Family place to stay near Lienz, Austria?

We need suggestions for a place to stay in the Austrian Tirol area, near Lienz, Austria. We are taking our boys ages 9 and 12 to Germany and Austria for the first time this August. We plan to first visit Munich and then travel to and stay in Reutte, Austria and tour the castles. We originally planned to drive to Salzburg from Reutte, but we have a Sunday night in between stays in Reutte and Salzburg without accomodations. We are considering driving around a bit and then up to Salzburg via the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse. I looked for Hostels, but people said to avoid hostels in Innsbruck, and I can't figure out other ones that are in the Lienz area. Any thoughts on a reasonable place to stay?

Susanne, you can look up any city/town in Austria by typing in www.(name of town).at So, for Lienz, check out the website www.lienz.at Unfortunately, on this website I could not find the word English or the British flag so that I could read the info on the website (my German is limited). Personally, I would travel into the area you want to go to and "wing it" for accommodations. Last year, our family of 3 drove from Venice to Salzburg and decided to get off at Spittal and stayed in a small town of Paternion. Since this area is a popular tourist area, we were able to find several pensions and private zimmers. We prefer to stay in private zimmers (private homes) because we enjoy talking to our hosts, the rooms are a lot cleaner than most hotels/pensions, and they are a lot less expensive. We start our search around 5-6pm and make sure we have found something before dark--they don't like to answer the door when it's dark. Look for signs "zimmer" or "zimmer frei". Lienz is a ways off the beaten path. You could take the A12 autobahn from Innsbruck towards Salzburg and get off going towards Kitzbuhel. You could check out some of those towns on their websites. However, I agree, Lienz does look like a great area. Just for your info, gas and lodging is less expensive in Austria than in Germany. Also, in these areas, there are a lot of luges--like the ones in Reutte. On the Michelin maps look for the words "sommer rodelbahn". Your boys will really enjoy them. Have fun making memories!
