Can you advice as to a nice place to stay in Munich (good beds with bathroom and some local atmosphere) close to happenings. Will be there Oct 5 and 6. Also in Murren, will be taking train from Munich to Murren next. Thanks
We stayed here in May and LOVED it. The balcony has a view of lots of waterfalls and the glaciers seem close enough to touch. We bought food at the grocery store in Murren and cooked quite a few meals in the apartment. It saved lots of money. But, a trip to Stägerstübli for dinner or lunch is a must. Great rates, friendly family, cozy, lovely. Have fun!
$ Chalet Helvetia, run by friendly Frau Hunziker, offers a homey, clean two-bedroom apartment with bathroom, kitchen, separate entrance, and balcony for 40 SF per person (up to 5 people, no breakfast, 2-night minimum preferred, higher price for 1-night stays, a few blocks below cable car station on path to Gimmelwald, look for red Zimmer sign on right, tel. 033-855-4169, mobile 079-234-7867, [email protected]).
In Muerren we stayed at Chalet Fontana in July. It is a b&b and well-priced, share bath.
Marta,
When visiting Munich, I always stay at Hotel Uhland, which is in a nice quiet neighborhood (close to Theresienwiese). The staff are great and the breakfasts incredible!
I can't offer any suggestions for Murren, as I've only stayed in Gimmelwald. You might check the Switzerland guidebook for the best listings.
Happy travels!
Is it better to stay in Wengen instead of Murren to catch the Jungfrauhoch train? If so, any Wengen B&B,
hotel recommendations?
I'll second both Hotel Uhland and Chalet Fontana.
For my recent trip in August to Muerren and Munich I stayed at the Hotel Uhland and Chalet Fontana. We had the apartment at the chalet and it was more than adequate. Both accommodations were quite satisfactory. The breakfast at Uhland was adequate and the location can't be beat.
For the purposes of catching the train to Jungfrau, Wengen is more convenient. I personally found Murren more to my liking - seemed smaller, more quaint, and the sunset views of the mountain faces were spectacular. I thought the views of the peaks themselves were better in Murren. It is not particularly hard to get from Murren to Wengen to catch the Jungfrau train - it sounds hard, because you take the train to Grutschalp, the cable car to Lauterbrunnen, then the train to Wengen, but the system is very well-timed to allow for that.
As far as staying in Murren, I stayed at the Eiger Guesthouse. It was what I would call okay. I didn't find the staff quite as friendly as other places I stayed, but they were also pretty full and busy. Maybe I just expected too much, but I was hoping for more outgoing hosts with more tips on hikes and such.
Hotel Bristol and Pension Seibel in Munich are well located and authentic. The Bristol is at the foot of Sendlicherstrasse, which goes from the ring road to the center near Marienplatz. The Seibel is just south of the Viktulienmarkt, a very atmospheric place and good lunch spot just south of Marienplatz.
Hotel Alpenruh in Murren was quite comfortable in 2005. I would stay there again.
