Recommendation for Barcelona area with kids

We are a family of four with 2 kids (ages 9 and 11). We are spending a week in Barcelona this summer and are looking for recommendations on what area to stay in. We plan to rent an apartment. Any recommendations would be helpful.

The Eixample area is within easy reach of the major attractions but far enough out to be quiet and safe. You need to make sure that anywhere you rent is within walking distance of a metro station, though.
