Found out the train from Barcelona to Arles is about 7-8 hours. I really want to stop in Figueres for the Dali Museum, but would only have about 2 hours, then need to catch 1:00PM train to Arles. If I stopped in Narbonne overnight, I could get a car and see Carcasonne Castle and then drive to Arles (our 3-day base). Am I pipedreaming or should I skip Figueres? A 7-8 hour train seems real long and we arrive at about 7:00PM.
I think the answer really depends on what is important to you and yours. Figueres does not add much travel time to your trip, just however long it takes to get to and from the train station, plus waiting for the train. ¶ Carcasonne will add about 2 hours of driving to your trip (including parking etc.). ¶ Arguably Carcasonne is less compelling a destination as a day trip. Can you stand to drive for a little less than an hour from Narbonne? If so, you could spend the night in Carcasonne, and drive to Arles the next day. I hope this helps you to think about it.
I stayed in Carcassone. The medieval walled fortress exterior is unsurpassed. You will be amazed. Unfortunatrely within the walls it has gone a bit tacky and commercial but the outside is unbelievable. A great stop over pt.
