We are 3 women traveling for almost 3 weeks to Germany. We plan to take trains & local public transportation. However, I am wondering whether we should consider renting a car in Freiburg for a day (the better to see the Black Forest area) and possibly rent a car for the day in Fussen as well. I know there are buses from Freiburg into the Black Forest and I guess a trolley or something like that which runs to Lake Titisee. I am just thinking that renting a car for a day would give us the flexibility to see more (we really only have 1 day to tour). In Fussen, I know we can take a bus to Neuschwanstein. However, I'd like to be able to see Linderhof as well, and also ride the Tegelberg luge, so I think a car would be a better way to get around. Is it possible to do a day car rental in either of these 2 towns? Thanks. Janet

I wouldn't bother with a car in the BF. The BF train is not a trolley but a real train - a double-decker that follows one of the world's most scenic routes: http://sandrock-karlsruhe.de/familie/wp-content/uploads/schwarzwaldbahn.jpg The distances are short and it's fairly easy to do a loop tour along the Hell's Valley route (to Titisee and on to Donaueschingen) and then along the Black Forest Railway from there to Offenburg through the highest part of the BF (Villingen, Triberg, Hornberg, Hausach, Gengenbach, Offenburg.) Freiburg to Donaueschingen to Offenburg to Freiburg takes a total of about 4 hours of mostly scenic rail time. Stop off where you like and get on an hour or two later. If you stay in any of the villages mentioned (but not Offenburg) or in Kirchzarten, 13 minutes outside Freiburg by train, instead of in Freiburg, you will get a Konus Card for your party and have access to all these train rides for FREE: http://www.blackforest-tourism.com/konus Freiburg is not one of the towns with this offer, but it's only 13 minutes by direct train from pleasant Kirchzarten.
