Re: Frankfurt Airport efficiency

May I please ask whether it would be possible to land at Terminal 2 (Malaysia Airlines) a 06:30 and depart from Terminal 1 (Lufthansa) for Berlin at 08:05. (Lufthansa has a 40 minutes minimum check in time at Kiosk) That would mean that I would only have approximately 55 minutes, from terminal 2 to clear immigration/customs (I am not from the EEC) and then transfer and check in at terminal 1. I would be grateful for any comments as to whether this is feasible? Thank you kindly for your assistance,
David

I'm assuming you don't have one ticket for both flights so you can't expect any help from the airlines. I think 55 min is enough as long as you don't get held up in immigration. When you get out of I/C, look for signs to the "Skyline". That's a people mover that goes from the upper floor of Terminal 2 to the upper floor of Terminal 1. You'll have to go up several floors to get to it. At the Terminal 1 stop you'll go down several floors to the departure hall of Terminal 1 and the check-in kiosks.

David As you know, getting through the airport is only one part of the equation in making your connection. Check the on time performance of your flight. Also, how might weather impact your departure? I live near Chicago. If it isn't storms in the summer (especially this summer), it's snow! Bobbie

As a Frankfurt local and weekly user of Frankfurt airport I wouldn't recommend to do it. Can you not get a FRA-BER flight on Air Berlin who depart from T2 as well? If you must change terminals try to get at least some 90 mins between flights. Also what's "the EEC"? There are two kind of passport lines. One is for EU citizens and the Swiss, the other is "for all others". Pre-flight security checks are much more efficient in T2 than in T1 - just FYI.

David, I had some experience with this sort of thing on my trip last year. I landed in Frankfurt and was given exactly ONE HOUR to make a connecting flight to Rome. When I noticed the short time on the tickets, I questioned the Travel Agent and was assured that was "normal". I also asked one of the Flight Attendants prior to landing and was told, "you won't have any problems but don't stop for coffee". I can't remember which Terminals I arrived and departed from? As it turned out, I was through Passport control and at the boarding gate for my connecting flight in 20-minutes! There were three factors that likely helped that work out well: 1.) I was seated near the front of the plane (just behind business/first class), so was able to disembark quickly upon arrival in Frankfurt. 2.) There weren't too many flights arriving at that time, so "traffic" at Passport control was fairly light. 3.) The airport had adequate staff on hand to process passengers through Passport control (and they were very efficient!). One question though - are your flights on a "code share" basis? If you have to collect your luggage and then re-check for the flight to Berlin, I'm not sure 55-minutes will be enough. Good luck!

Andreas, I'm sure EEC means European Economic Community. I think that was used before EU.

As Bobbie said, there are several factors. My flight (4 hours) got to Frankfurt airspace on time but then got put into a holding pattern, so we landed about 30 minutes late (clear skies, so who knows why). I was in line at passport control (non-EU) for about 72 seconds. But then there was a 30-minute delay before they offloaded the luggage. 3 days later, I was back at the airport to meet folks arriving. All the flights into Frankfurt that day were late, some by a couple of hours or more. The word that went around was the installation of a new system in the control tower. Again, clear skies. I'd read the Lufthansa fine print to find out what they will or will not do if you miss your flight.
