re: car rental in Lisbon

Is it safe to rent and drive a car there?

Like any large city with good public transportation, you probably would be better to use the public transportation rather than a car. We always pick up our car when we leave Lisbon turn it in when we return to Lisbon and enjoy the city car free. IMO, traffic, parking, etc makes it not worthwile to have a car in the city. If you plan to see more of Portugal, then you could get a car when you leave the city. Driving in Portugal is safe and easy.

Do what Carol said. You'll pluck yourself bald-headed trying to find places to park....and wind up using public transportation anyway.

I agree with the other folks who responded. No way does a car make sense in Lisbon. (In fact I have never been in a big city in Europe where it made sense, after ten trips.) Pick it up when you leave or drop it before you arrive.

We'll be picking up a car in Madrid and dropping it off in Granada. This leaves no choice but to drive the car into Lisbon. I've decided to stay near the Senora do Monte Miradouro Park, which seems to have a decent amount of free parking in the area. We won't be there until mid-October, but if you're interested, I'll let you know how it went. Once I find a desirable spot, I do plan to leave the car where it is for the duration of our stay.
