Rauchbeir(smoked beer) in Munich?

Planning on taking a side trip to Munich for a few days, has anyone ever drank smoked beer in Munich? if you had, where did you go to drink one or where can you buy it in Munich? Thanks

I am sure you can find it, if you know the brand. The best known Rauchbier is Köstritzer (from Bad Köstritz). At one time even our Sam's Club - there are only two in Washington - sold Rauchbier for a Christmas treat. In the Beer Capital of the World I can't imagine not getting a Maß if you look. After all, several taverns here in Seattle carry it.

I've had rauchbeir, but not in Munich. The style is more associated with Bamberg, well to the north of Munich. The best known brand is Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier, which has its own beer cellar. You may find rauchbier for sale at a store. However, because most of the biergartens and beer halls in Munich are either owned or closely associated with a particular local brewery, you may not find it on tap. I don't think any of the big Munich brewers (Paulaner, Hofbrau, Hacker-Schorr, Lowenbrau or Ayinger) produce the style.

I'm never going to say never - but I lived in Munich years ago and have visited each of the past four years and never saw it.

They do bottle it, so it may be available - I just have never seen it.

Just one word about Munich and beer. It may be the beer capital of Germany (and perhaps the world), but don't expect the beer selection to be a microcosm of the world or even German styles. Your choices consist mostly of lagers and hefeweissens that are typical of the immediate region, not Germany as a whole. You'll find lots of great beer in large quantities, but if you're looking for a special variety that is closely associated with central Thuringia, for example, then go central Thuringia, because Munich probably won't have it.

Rauchbier may be available in stores, not the Gasthaus. While Weißbier (only Americans call it Hefeweizen) is now available outside of the Bavarian corridor, for micro-brews you need to look a bit harder.
