Rain & Snow in Mid-March

Weather forecasts for Western Europe are calling for rain and snow with freezing temperatures nearly the entire week of March 14-20. I realize forecasts are not always accurate, but most of the time they are off by only a day or so, not an entire week. I had a driving tour planned for Bavaria and the Salzburg lake district that week. I may have to back off that, travel by train, instead, and spend more time in the cities. Is that a good strategy? If not, what is? Going south of the Alps would not help; the same conditions are forecast for Florence and Rome.

Planning to do more train and less car is probably a smart precaution to take -- but don't avoid countryside in favor of city just because of the weather. Plan to get as much country as you can, just maybe done by train / bus instead of a car.

We got snowed on in Melk, Austria then sleeted on in Prague in 1999 -- a long walk through small lanes in snow-covered Melk is a magical memory. That was later in the year -- in April -- no less.

Snow removal is usually very efficient in Germany. Barring an unforseen blizzard, roads are usually clear within 24 hours of a storm, if not sooner. But because it looks like you have a week of possible inclement weather coming up... it would probably be prudent to go with rail travel instead.
