We will be traveling round trip from Munich to Paris, returning to Munich in five days. What is the most economical method for this trip?

If these are the only long distance rides you will be taking, a railpass will NOT be cost effective.
If you book well in advance (up to three months allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get discount fares for either day routes or the direct night train. What are your travel dates?

Thanks Barry and Tim - I've done some additional research based on your replies and find that it's too early for reservations since we aren't traveling until July. I signed up for an email notice once the timeframes are appropropriate. Your advice is much appreciated.

If you decide to take the night train in either direction, you'll need to book as soon as the three-month window opens (for example, book on 10 April to travel on 10 July) to have any chance of getting the best discount fare. Popular night trains like Munich-Paris can sell out weeks in advance and the discount fares go really fast.
