Rail versus Bus transport in Bavaria

I am trying to determine how many days I want to pushase on a german twin pass. We will be staying in Schliersee for 7 days and plan on day trips to Salzburg, Mittenwald, Munich, Fussen, and some other destination in the region yet to be determined. Is bus service within Bavaria a wise choice? Is it less expensive and more efficient time wise? In examining rail line maps, it seems that each of our day trips would require going through Munich on the way to and back. Is a bus ride between say Fussen and Schliersee preferred over the rail? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I would say, for the places you say you want to go - no days. Everything is accessible with a Bayern-Ticket for €27 for both of you, €13,50 each. That's far less expensive than a rail pass day.

As for going by rail through Munich, that's pretty much it. Because most people to that, you won't find much bus service. Schliersee is pretty much a dead zone as far as bus service. There are a few buses a day over to Brannenburg on the Rosenheim-Innsbruck line. You could get to Salzburg that way.

But why base yourself in a pretty resort area like Schliersee and then go everywhere else. While in Schliersee, stay in Schliersee. Spend a few other days in Munich as a base for Füssen, Mittenwald, and Salzburg.

Steve-
I realize this doesn't really answer your question, but I suggest you at least consider a rental car for these locations. It's easy to do and more time-efficeint in my opinion.

I prefer the rail over a car rental. While less efficient time wise, the train offers an opportunity to let someone else get me to where I'm going. I commute 100 miles a day in my regular life, so the train is a break from all of that driving. Plus, there is a romanticism for me with the trains. All of the advice has been useful. I have determined that we will purchase a 4 day German Twin Pass and supplement that with Bayern tickets. Thanks all! Hope to see you out there : )
