Can anyone please help me with how I can travel from the Zurich airport to Chamonix, France? I'm not having any luck with the Swiss Rail System website.
Jim, first go to www.sbb.ch/en. This is the Swiss train website. Enter Zurich Flughafen in the departure window and Chamonix-Mont Blanc in the arrival window. The schedules will come up. The journey takes just over 5hrs with 3-4 train changes depending on the run you select.
What trouble are you having? It is pretty straightforward-put in Zurich under "from" and Chamonix under "to". Pick a date the same day of the week you will be traveling, but within the next 2 months. (Schedules change mid-June so you swon't be able to get a date after that). Then choose a time and hit "search connections". The next screen will askk if you mean "Chamonix Mont-Blanc" and you accept that by just hitting "search" again. The next screen will show your choices. Basically the route is Zurich to Visp to Martigny to Chamonix. It will show a connection at Vallorcine but you may or may not actually changge trains there (it is the border.) Travel time is 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on the time of day. Travel from the Zurich airport to the Zurich main station is a simple trip of about 12 minutes. The train station is right in the airport. www.rail.ch (in English) www.sbb.ch
Thanks folks your suggestions worked. I see that my problem occurred because I was trying to get schedules and fares for August.
Regarding fares--- if you are spending additional time traveling in Switzerland, you might look at getting some kind of pass. It will cover travel all the way to Chamonix.
Thanks Lola. I am wondering if anyone can give me the "Reader's Digest" version on how Swiss Rail Half Fare cards (or tickets work) and in what circumstances are they price-effective?
