It's a long journey, just short of 11 hours with five changes if you take the 8:03am train out of Lauterbrunnen. Check schedules/fares/ and purchase tickets at the Swiss Rail site: http://rail.ch

I agree it's a long trip. You can book a discount Europa-Spezial tickets online from German Rail for €39 from Lauterbrunnen (7:33) to Freilassing (17:33), in Germany, across the river from Salzburg, with 3 changes. From there you can get a full fare German Rail ticket from Freilassing to Obertraun for €28,90, with 2 changes.

It may be less changes to go by way of Zurich/Stuttgart/Munich/Salzburg.

Jan, The ride from Lauterbrunnen to Obertraun (day) is several hours with a number of transfers...I would rather spend a bit more time on the train rather than repeat the transfer process. The ride will require 6 transfers in almost 13 hrs. Unless you definitely want to see the countryside, I would suggest the night train departing at 1933, arriving at 0853 with 4 transfers. This ride takes ca. 13.5 hrs. But, by early dawn (if you're going in the summer, it's already daylight), the train pulls into Wels, good place (near Linz), where you have at least an hour to change trains, ie., relax and have breakfast at the station. I would take this night train with the hour pause at Wels, which I'm familiar with because going from Berlin-Vienna r/t, the ICE train stops at Wels.
