Rail Pass in Switzerland

Having looked at the different rail passes available in switz I am now totally confused. Cosidering we do not deal with public trans. in our area it is all new to me. I am hoping someone can tell me what they think would be the best pass for us. We are 5 adults 1 24 year old spending 7 or 8 days in Switz. Staying Interlocken region. Plan to see all we can, lots of public trans as we will not have a car. Want to do Jungfra region/mtn. Gondola, cogwheel train, ferry, etc... Please help, suggest, advise.... I just need a place to start. Nothing is firm yet still in early planing stages. It will be a Fall 2012 trip 10/4-10/12 ish! Thank you

As you have found, there are several types of Swiss passes and cards. The best pass is the Swiss GA pass. It's also the most expensive. With exception, you get unlimited rides anywhere is Switzerland. There are exceptions and the top of the Jungfrau and Schilthorn are two such places. Your GA pass will get you to Wengen on the Jungfraubahn and up to Muerren on the Schilthornbahn. From there you get a 50% discount for the remainder of the journey. A couple of notes. 1) The full round trip fare to the Jungfraujoch from Interlaken is about $190. It's almost $90 round trip fare to the top of the Schilthorn. 2) No Swiss Pass or Card will give you better than a 50% discount to get to the two mountain tops. One Swiss card that the Swiss webiste doesn't cover that much is the Swiss 1/2-Fare Card. It's good for 30 days and cost 110CHF. I don't think that you can buy it online but you can buy it in virtually any Swiss train station including, most likely, the first one you arrive at when entering Switzerland. The Swiss 1/2-Fare Card gets you a 50% discount (1/2-Fare) on all Swiss bus, ferry, rail, gondola, etc. transportation for the 30 days. You also pay only 1/2 fare to the Jungfrau and Schilthorn. When you start looking at the math, you need to begin justifying the cost of the 1/2-Fare card. Your best justification is going to the top of the Jungfrau. Also look at the cost of getting to and from the Berner Oberland from your entry and exit points in Switzerland. There is also a Swiss Saver card but it's on holiday for the moment. It will be back on April 11. This pass could provide different options and savings for you. Finally, there is the Eurail pass. It works differently and it only gets you a 24% discount to the two mountain tops and it doesn't work on the buses.

Four day Fllex passes are 2 for1 for October travel, so that is probably your best deal. Flex passes offer 50% of on other days, apart from the four fully covered days, so can work well for an 8 day trip.
