Rail Pass & ???

My girlfriend and I will be traveling from Frankfurt to Munich and then back to Frankfurt (she has relatives that live there). We will stay in Munich for a week. My question concerns how many days I will need to buy a railpass for. While we are in Munich we plan on making day trips to Salzburg, the castles, and Andechs monastery. We are both over 26 so if we buy a railpass it will have to be first class. Any thought on how many days we will need the pass for? Thanks in advance.

You do not need a railass at all. At FRA, you can buy a "Quer Durchs Land" ticket - a daypass good on the regional trains to Munich - for 48€ total for two from a DB ticket machine at the Regionalbahnhof station. (If you're in a hurry, regular tickets will cost 190€ on the fast trains - use the Fernbahnhof station at FRA.) Use the DB railway site to find a schedule; click on "only local transport" under "means of Transport" to identify the regional trains you can use with the QDL ticket. For the expensive tickets, click on "All": http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en Use these station names: Frankfurt(M)Flughafen MUNICH With the QDL, your trip is about 6 hours; with expensive tickets, maybe 4 or less. If you arrive on a Sat or Sun, use a "happy weekend" ticket - 40€ instead of 48 for the regional trains. Outings from Munich: Salzburg or Füssen: Bayern ticket daypass. 29€: http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm Andechs: S-Bahn to Herrsching, walk from there. Shouldn't cost much. Options here: http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/static_languages/en/home/index.html Returning to Frankfurt: use the QDL, HW tickets OR buy advance-purchase tix at a discount on the fast trains (same site as above, buy and print at home.) A ticket for two can be as low as 49€. (These tickets would be possible on Day 1 as well, but who knows if your flight will arrive on time?) So I think your trip will cost a good bit less than 200€ total with outings and if you use the QDL or the happy weekend ticket to travel between Munich and Frankfurt.

Russ - Thanks for the excellent information. In fact, we are staying with my girlfriend's aunt for a week before we head to Munich so booking the ICE ahead of time will not be a problem. Your suggestions will save us at least half of what we would've paid for the railpass. Thanks again!!

Glad to help. Be sure to read about the restrictions on the Bayern ticket, Weekend ticket, and QDL ticket. And book those cheap tickets exactly 92 days out for the best shot at the lowest prices at the time you want to go.

To get to Andechs, take the S8 from anywhere in town, direction Herrsching. There are also regional trains that go from the Hbf to Herrsching. If you get an MVV Tageskarte Gesamtnetz, it will cover the S-Bahn, or regional train, to Herrsching, round trip, and the MVV bus to Andechs, if there is one. The MVV buses don't meet all the S-Bahn or regional trains. To find out which ones go to the Munich metro website, www.mvv-muenchen.de. When I went there, there was supposed to be a bus meeting the S-Bahn I planned to take, but the S-Bahn was cancelled, and I had to take the one 20 minutes later. The MVV bus was gone but there was a private bus for €2,20. For Frankfurt to Munich, you can take one of the hourly REs from there to Wuezburg, then to Munich via Nuernberg or Treuchtlingen. If you get a local ticket to Kahl am Main (1st stop in Bavaria for €7,30/p), you can use a €29 Bayern-Ticket from there. €43,60 for 2, not much less than the GdLT and more than the Schoenes-Wochenende-Ticket. Unless you try to book the Saving Fare ticket really late and the price has really gone up, the time saved might be worth a little more cost.
