I am planning to follow Rick Steve's 3 week car tour around France pretty much to the letter. But, I am trying to blend in a few day self-driven canal cruise for just my husband and I. Any suggestions on which trip to take, what company to use, and how to coordinate the car rental with the boat are appreciated. Any tips will be helpful. Thanks! Yolnda
I've used Locaboat several times and obviously would again. My understading is that LeBoat is equally good. Brittany has the most scenic routes. Burgundy is next. The Carmague has intersting stops, but you spend too much time in a ditch. The Canal du Midi is too crowded - - avoid it. I'd keep the car and park it. If you don't, you'll spend too much time dorking around with public transportation getting to the marina. Additionally, the little marina stores are like a Quick Stop - - expensive and minimal selection. You'll need to stock up on grub before you get to the boat.
We used Locaboat ... started at Agen and went down the River Baise, and it was wonderful. Very scenic, gorgeous little towns, very little traffic (mid-September several years ago). Highly recommended.
