So, I've been dating a French guy for a year and a half, and come January, we'll finally have the opportunity to live in the same country (in theory). However, all of the jobs I have looked into in France and which seem interested in hiring me are not able (do to local legislation) to get me a work VISA. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone knew if a PACS (which is a type of civil union in France) qualifies one for a work VISA. Otherwise, are there any suggestions of how I can move to and work in Lyon, France? We are actually planning on getting married next summer, but in January we won't quite be ready. Also, if you have a PACS do you have to come back to the US in order to fill out new paperwork in order to get married or could I just stay in France and change paperwork there? Any help or any suggestions would be much appreciated!
The use of PACS in France is ultimately making you married in France. Socially it is viewed this way as well as legally with slight differences than formal marriage - ie you can file separate taxes. What a PACS will do is make it easier for you to get a work visa because you are now legally tied to the country. You are still ultimately and American citizen and thus will need a visa for staying longer than 90 days and to work. PACS will help link this because ultimately your partner is now claiming financial responsibility for you. However PACS does not give you "work permit".
