I just saw a photo of the bridge and I know I am not going to be able to cross it (I have a bad case of acrophobia). Is there any other way to get to the castle?
Are you driving there? I don't know what bridge you are talking about but if driving should be no problem.
You have to walk up a hill to reach the castle, but the bridge is just an optional scenic vista located far from the main access route. You'll notice that most pictures taken from the bridge are looking slightly DOWN on the castle. You have to walk UP from the valley to reach Neuschwanstein.
Great - thanks so much! I was afraid it was the only access point to get to the castle. The photo I saw was of the bridge only - not the castle - so it was hard to tell where it was. I'm glad I came here to ask.
Just up from the ticket kiosk is the Hotel Müller (large white building on the right). From in front of it horse drawn carriages will take you up the hill to the castle. If you stay on that road, ahead is a switchback and it is all uphill to the castle from there (no bridges). There is a bus somewhere (I've never looked for it) which will take you up a longer hill to a road above Mary's bridge. From there you can hike down the hill (over the bridge) to the castle.
Mardee, When you take the bus--which is right out on the same road as the horses,--it takes you up around the back of the castle. The bridge is there but you do not have to cross the bridge to get to the castle. you just walk down the hill. The views are gorgeous. I just wanted you to know you don't have to cross the bridge.
