Question about eating in Switzerland

Hi, I'll be finishing up some vacation days in Milan on 6/16/12 and was thinking about taking several days to explore the Bernese Oberland area in Switzerland. I'm interested in day hiking in the area and just enjoying what I'm told is one of the most beautiful places in the world. In my initial perusal of the several guidebooks (Rick's, Fodors, and Frommers) my initial thought is to stay in either Murren, Wengen, or Lauterbrunnen. In any case, my question is regarding the ability to eat cheap and on the run in this area. I'll be staying in a hotel so will be eating at the breakfast buffet in the morning but I was thinking about lunch and dinner and since I am traveling alone and not into fine dining I am interested in grabbing sandwiches, etc. on the go. For example, when I was in Italy I would just grab a slice of pizza and when I was in Ireland just fish and chips. So my question is are any of the Swiss supermarkets (like Migros, Denner, or Co-op) in the above three towns? I have done searches on several forums and have not found the answer that I'm looking for. In addition, I went to the websites of the supermarkets but even with Google Translate just could not succeed at finding their branches in the above locations. I know that these are small towns and I have read that, at least in Murren (I believe), that basically the dining options are mostly limited to the hotels themselves. Also, in the absence of any supermarkets are there any other places to grab something quick and easy? Also, if anybody has any thoughts about picking one of those three towns over the other, please chime in as well. I'll be staying in moderate/nice hotels, not interested in nightlife, more interested in outdoors/hiking/wandering. Thanks much. Rob

Mürren has a number of great ( I would say world-class) day hikes right from your door. Chalet Fontana B&B is a great place to stay as a single, but there are other options in the hotels. There are at least two stand- alone restaurants in Mürren the Stäger Stübli with Swiss food, and a casual but very good Asian restaurant. Hotel dining rooms are also an option. The larger Coop markets in Switzerland, such as the Zurich downtown market, offer lots of grab and go options like salads and sandwiches. But I do not recall if the Mürren Coop offers this. It is a pretty small store with limited fresh veggies but we have found enough ther to cook a nice dinner. There is also a bakery in town that might make sandwiches---that is pretty common in hiking base towns. I do not know for sure as we either carry just fruit and nuts, or stop at a mountain restaurant for luck when hiking. No sandwiches. If you stay at Chalet Fontana you could ask if you could put a few items in the fridge in the kitchen (cheese, prosciutto etc.) and make your own sandwiches with stuff you have purchased at the Coop which is right across the street.

Thanks so much Lola. I took a better look at Rick's Best of Europe guide and saw that there are Co-ops in all three cities. Don't know how I missed that. Thanks for the Murren tips, I'm leaning towards staying there, I've never heard of anybody not liking the town and I have indeed heard that the hiking from there is fantastic. Rob

There definately is a grocery type store in Wengen,, as when staying there we bought food in it, eating out in Switzerland is insanely expensive that we picniced in the room sometimes. Loved Wengen, plenty of awesome hikes etc in area.

Wengen is lovely and one of our favorite places to stay in the world is there. But I do not think there as many great day hikes right from your door in Wengen as there are from Mürren. Or maybe we did not look hard enough. But we still have a list of highly scenic challenging hikes we want to do from Mürren, I. Addition to the ones we have already done. OTHT, the hike from Wengen up to Kleine Scheidegg and along the ridge to Männlichen is one of our favorites anywhere. You cannot go wrong in this area wherever you stay.

The Coop in Murren is quite small and has hours which are shorter. Nevertheless we have been very happy getting premade salads, even a big salad bowl big enough for both of us, wurst, cheese, small mayo, Pringles (although we prefer real chips the tube keeps them whole while hiking), biscuits, mustard, plates, cutlery, napkins, drinks, etc. The one down the hill in Lauterbrunnen is next to the station and Grutschalp lift and has more variety and slightly longer hours. They both have plenty fruit and veg, too. In Wengen we haven't used the supermarket preferring to visit the most excellent bakery and supplement what we brought from across the valley.

We also love Wengen and the COOP market there, although small, has a good choice of food items. Our lunches to take on hikes came from COOP-sandwiches, yogurt, fruit, and decent ion of cheese. Switzerland is very expensive and prices of meals in Zurich rival London and Tokyo. Even having Raclette was a bit of a splurge (but worth it).
