Queens Day in Amsterdam

4 of us will be coming of a Viking Cruise on April 29 and will be in Amsterdam for Queens Day. Not sure how I feel about all the people. Is there anyway to get out of town for the day to a less chaotic place?

Barbara, I also posted a question on 8/17 about Queens Day Amsterdam 2012. You may want to read the responses I got back on my question. If you Google Queens Day Amsterdam you will get loads of information. I'm totally re-thinking my visit to Amsterdam during that period.

Yes, most public transportation will be working, as will taxis. Maybe you would enjoy a day wandering around (with crowds, I'm afraid, but well behaved ones) Keukenhof Gardens looking at the world's best collection of Tulips and Hyacinths and many other bulbs and orchids? I would. They will be at their peak.

...."Yes, most public transportation will be working, as will taxis....." Intercity trains will be operating. But within Amsterdam, most of the of the public transport will not be operating. All the streets are closed to vehicles in the center of the city...including trams and taxis.

That attack occurred in Apeldoorn. Be warned the video of the attacked posted on sites like YouTube is very disturbing.

I was in Amsterdam for Queens Day and found it not to be a big problem, but as Michael mentioned you can get a train out of town, to a smaller town perhaps. All of the Netherlands celebrate so each town will have some festivals to attend, it may be just the town "garage sales". The year I was there I went to the sales searching for candlesticks. Next time, maybe 2012 I will look for picture frames.
