Have just found out about one of the largest celebrations in Amsterdam is taking place on April 30, 2012 & our trip plans were to arrive in Haarlem that day for the last 4-5 days of our 2 week Europe trip. Re-thinking pushing our trip up 1 week earlier to avoid this celebration as we can't go later. Any thoughts?
Queen's day isn't just celebrated in Amsterdam, it encompasses the entire country. But, why do you want to avoid it? Crowds, costs, attractions closed? IME, It's a great all-day party, a bit like mardi-gras.
Michael I didn't realize it was such a big event other than Amsterdam. Read about rooms higher in price & many only available for longer stays. Public transportation zilch on the 30th & masses of people who cannot handle their liquor.
I have not been for Queen's Day yet but I was there for the World Cup. Crazy. If you are not into the partying, you could try to change the dates. Or there are some nearby alternatives. How about Brugge? Five days there might be a bit much, but you could day trip into Antwerp, Ghent or Brussels.
I'm currently living in The Netherlands. The Queen's Day is celebrated around the country, but it is mostly a harmless party outside Amsterdam and perfectly manageable if you opt not to go to Amsterdam on 4/30.
