My wife and I are going to the Christmas markets in Bad Homburg and Büdingen, Germany in December. We are looking for a convenient central location with easy access to both markets. It will be our last weekend in Germany and we'll be catching an 11am flight on Monday out of Frankfurt. We prefer to stay in small German-style hotels in a picturesque smaller town or village. I've considered Koenigstein but perhaps there's something more suitable. Anyone have any suggestions that meet the criteria. Any and all help appreciated. Best Regards, Dave, Austin, TX.
It's not a village, and it's to the south of Frankfurt, but google images of Heppenheim.
Don't think it would be considered a "village" but we were very impressed with Alsfeld's old town. Absolutely lovely.
mainz is a city, far from a village. Heppenheim might be right up your alley though.
Seligenstadt might be nice, though it isn't really in between. Kronberg and Koenigstein are pretty, but they are only close to Bad Homburg. Why not just stay in Bad Homburg? It is beautiful up there in the Taunus Mountains. You might also consider staying in the neighborhood of Hoechst in Frankfurt. Very lovely and you have easy access to both Bad Homburg and Buedingen from here.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Heppenheim looks truly lovely. I considered Bad Homburg as well. We will have a car which we will have to return and still make an 11:00am flight out of Frankfurt. I'm worried if we stay too far from the airport the anxiety of getting to the airport will cause a schism between my wife and I! I think we are being overly ambitious trying to fit in two mar lets that last weekend but apparently I'm outranked. Thanks again. Dave
"I'm worried if we stay too far from the airport the anxiety of getting to the airport will cause a schism between my wife and I!" Perhaps one caveat for Heppenheim, then. The closest autobahn exit is currently blocked because of road construction. They may finish by the time you visit, but these things always seem to take longer than one would expect. It's still possible to get to the town (obviously), but it would be a little confusing if you lack familiarity with the area.
How about Bad Vilbel? It has direct roads to both Bad Homburg and Buedingen and good access to the airport.
It is a typical small German city and authentic.
