I am traveling to CDG airport and need to take the TVG from the airport to Rennes. Should I pre-purchase (before leaving the US) my TVG ticket and risk losing the cost of the ticket if my plane is late or should I wait and purchase the ticket when I arrrive and risk not getting a seat on the TVG? Are "resevations" needed for the TVG in advance? Thanks for your input!
I believe you'll have to make your own way from CDG to Paris Montparnasse station to take the TGV to Rennes....there is no direct link via TGV from the airport. There are several per day from Paris to Rennes, some of which are direct...about 2 hours. The TGV does require a reservation, so if you want to ensure yourself a seat, buy before your fly. If it's a weekend or during high summer, you may find yourself without a spot. Allow an hour to get off the plane and thru customs, an hour to take the RER to the Gare du Nord, another half hour to take metro Line 4 to Montparnasse.....and give yourself another hour pad. There's a direct TGV run from Montparnasse at 2:05 pm. If you don't buy a discount ticket, you can change them...just make sure you check all the details of the exchange or refunds on the website...http://www.sncf.fr/indexe.htm
I'm not sure what course is best for Kathy, but wanted to assure her that there are several direct trains from DeGaulle to Rennes. I think the only thing at risk is her reservation, not her ticket, but I'm not sure about that.
There are also flights from DeGaulle to Rennes, and unless tickets are a done deal it might be worth checking that out too.
There is direct TGV service from CDG to Rennes. Trains depart at 10:28, 13:38, and 15:42. The advantage to booking ahead is that you may be able to get a PREM'S (discount) fare. The disadvantage is that PREM'S are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. If you want flexibility, book a regular fare ticket. If your plane is late, you can exchange the ticket for either a CDG or a Gare Montparnasse departure.
