My husband and I are planning 2 road trips (pilgrimages really :-)) on our visit to Benelux:
Luxembourg -> Orval -> Chimay -> Rocheford -> Brussels
and
Antwerp -> Westmalle -> Achel
For now, we are planning to rent a car, twice. Can the Antwerp trip be accomplished with public transportation?

I know you need a car to reach Westmalle. And just checking, you are aware, of course, that you can only visit a cafe near the Westmalle monastery (or stay in the guesthouse)?
It looks like you can take a train/bus combo to reach Achel from Antwerp, although if I'm translating the website correctly, you may have to walk a considerable distance after getting off the bus. Take the train to Neerpelt, then take busline 18A and get off at Kerk Achel-Statie

You can also visit the Koningshoeven Abbey Brewery, but only on weekends or by special arrangement.
Thanks for the suggestion on Koningshoeven Abbey Brewery. We did not even realize it was so close to our second road trip! And it is one of my husband's favourite beers!!
