My wife and I will be visiting Hannover. Is the db rail pass accepted on local underground and local lightrail in Hannover specifically?
Rail transportation in almost any German city consist of the S-Bahn (green S in a circle) and the U-Bahn. There might also be trams and/or buses. Only the S-Bahn, which is run by German Rail, accepts the DB (or Eurail) pass.
Hanover has two main public transportation providers: - S-Bahn Hannover, which is owned by DB, DB passes are valid there - üstra, which is owned by the city, they only accept a few DB tickets (e.g. Schönes-Wochenende, NiedersachsenTicket), to the best of my knowledge the DB pass is not among them. I think you'll have to buy GVH tickets.
GVH " Großraum-Verkehr Hannover" is the Hanover fare and transport association of S-Bahn H., üstra, and some smaller companies. The common GVH tickets are valid with all of these companies. A few of üstras city center tram routes are in tunnels, but Hanover has actually no bona fide underground ( U-Bahn).
The prices for all day, unlimited ride tickets for the GVH can be found here. For the inner zone, downtown Hannover it's €4,30 for one person, €8,40 for up to five people. For 2 zones, including downtown, the suburbs, and the airport, it's €5,50 and €10,80. For 3 zones, for the entire Verkehrverbund, €6,80 and €13,40.
