We will be travelling through Arles on our way to our hotel in St. Remy.
We would love to visit the Amphitheater and the Church of St. Trophime and its cloister. Since we are both in our 80th, we need to avoid long walks. Can anyone give me information about the closest one to the sights. Thanks.
Nelda-While it's touristy, there's a Petite Tren (small white tourist shuttle that looks like a train) that, for a fee, picked up near the parking lot for the bus station and then made a circuit with stops at several sites, including the amphitheater. It's Arles' answer to a hop-on-hop-off bus. It's been a few years, so sorry, I don't have more specifics about exact parking lot address, price, or what stops are included now.
Closest? ... hmmm ... There's a very convenient public parking area just on the other side of the old city gates on the north, on the river side of the traffic roundabout at Place Lamartine. The arena and amphitheater are a few blocks directly south from the city gates. From the parking area the road leading north out of the traffic roundabout - the N2570 - will start you in the right direction for St. Remy.
There is a large parking deck directly east of the post office on Blvd. de Lices. We used it for the week we stayed there. I can't remember the parking fee but it was very easy to get into and out of and very convenient to the center just outside the walls from the amphitheater. Be aware it is closed on Sundays if that is the day you are going. Enjoy your trip!
We've been told there's free parking along the Rhone. Does anyone know if this is correct?
Thank you all for your very valuable information. We now have various ways to ta tackle the Arles situation. Thanks again for your input.
