My husband and I plan to go to Provence for 1-2 weeks at some point this year. We have a pretty open time frame in which to go, but our main goal is to avoid as many of the high season tourist crowds as possible. Provence appeals to us for the culture of slow, relaxed lifestyles, the food, and of course the wine. We plan to rent an apartment or gite and stay in one spot the whole time. Has anyone been to Provence in September or October? Is this a good time to go given the above? Thank you!
I love Europe in the fall. I have visited Provence in early September and mid-October. I would shoot for something in between those. By mid-October, most tourists seem to be gone, but in more remote places, that means that a lot of things are closed, too. I would guess late September would be best. I think it also largely depends on where you are planning to go in Provence. If you're headed to the Luberon, earlier is better. If you want more French Riviera stuff, probably later. And if you're in an isolated, countryside gite, you may not need to worry terribly.
I was in Provence the end of September last year. The weather was perfect. There were tourists, but it wasn't bad. I think the only time you may find it more tourist free would be a time that you wouldn't want to be there.
