Provence Village for Two Week Stay?

Hi!

We are making plans to rent a house with 3 other couples in Provence for 2 weeks next spring. We have found three houses that meet our criteria (4 bedrooms; within walking distance of a town; good transportation connections-- probably near Avignon; kitchen for preparing some meals, etc.)

Two of the villages I'm not familiar with and wondered if anyone has been to them or has stayed nearby. If so, would they make a good base for a couple of weeks to take day trips in the region?

  1. Roussillion (48 km. from Avignon)

  2. Le Thor (37 km. from Avignon)

  3. Saint Didier (28 km. from Avignon)

  4. Others to consider?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Just returned from Luberon. Roussillion was one of our fav villiages and is in a good location for visiting other villages. I'll be posting pictures and trip details soon to our personal blog; http://www.gadtravel.com

Also just got back and agree with the previous poster that Roussillon is a very special place. Breathtaking views, perfect for wandering, etc.

However, as much as we loved it, I don't know that there's enough there for a two-week stay. You say that your choice has to have good transportation connections...Roussillon does not have good connections...it's a hill town that can be overrun with tourists in the springtime, making parking an issue.

Have you looked at Uzes? We stayed outside of this charming smaller-sized city/town (but definitely not a village) and throughly enjoyed our time there. They have a great market on Saturdays, and it's a lot more authentic (i.e., less touristy) than other towns in the area.

Just food for thought...you can't go wrong no matter what you choose. Have a great trip!

We have been to Provence several times. Our town of choice is Sablet, which is just south of Vaison La Romaine and north of Avignon. Nice little town, with all the services you could want: bakeries, butcher, small grocery store, restaurants, etc. It is a delightful place and from there, with a car, all of the area is accessible. I think a car is very important in Provence, as many of the places you will want to visit on a two week trip do not have transportation connections. We have gone as far as Aix, Marseille, etc on day trips from Sablet, and always arrive home in time to cook a lovely meal. Cars are available at the Avignon TGV station, which is an easy connection from CDG airport.

I agree with Sue that you'll want a car in Provence. There is plenty to do and you'll find lots of possible day trips to fill two weeks. We stayed outside Lourmarin and drove north to Vaison la Romaine, west to Pont du Gard, and south to Cassis, and lots of places in between.

Roussillon is lovely but I'd be tempted to choose one of the other towns due to the popularity of Roussillon. All seem to be in great locations, Le Thor near Isla sur la Sorgue and Saint Didier south of Carpentras. If you are looking for other options, you might check France: Homestyle for house rentals.
