PROVENCE OR RIVIERA?

I know this is subjective, but which area would give us the biggest bang in a week (we're driving)? We would like to see things that are as different as possible from back home and would like to do it in a relaxed, enjoyable way.

It's not really necessary to do either/ or. This area is not so large that you couldn't do a mixture. I agree with Kent that the Riviera is best by train (Rick's video on the subject demonstrates this). We spent a day stopping a various places: Cinque Terra, Monaco, Nice. Everything is very close.

It's also beautiful!

We will be doing this late September/early October. I think the beach scene will be secondary then.

As you say, subjective. But.

Provence. Lots to see and do.

It depends on whether you like countryside or glamour.

A stay in Provence is best if you like countryside. Glitz and glamour greets you on the South coast. Depends on your style.

If you, I would consider a few days in Villefranche (next door to Nice) and a jaunt up to Avignon and Aix en Provence to take in a bit of the countryside. That shouldn't be too much for a week.

We did both last fall and as other's have said, they really have a different feel. Provence was more relaxed - lovely scenery, great drives, small, uncrowded, gorgeous villages. The Riveria was much more busy - saw some superb museums and fun in the evenings.

Driving in the Riviera is not fun. It's crowded, confusing and steep. There are three primary roads between the towns - high, medium and low. Parking is tough. See the area by train.

With a car, Provence is a joy (except for Aix).

no question Provence is the most enjoyable and easiest to drive. I was in both Aug 2007 driving, Riveria was bumper to bumper almost everywhere. Provence a delight.
