I'm in a great quandary. I'm going to Paris for 5 days in September, then moving on to the Dordogne for 5 days and where to next? Provence or Burgundy for 5 or 6 days? I have an open jaw return from Lyon, so either area is doable. Thanks everyone... I value your opinions.
These are such very different parts of France that you really need to make the decision based on your own preferences.
They would both be wonderful September destinations.
If you are truly indifferent, I think Provence might be logistically simpler than jogging back north to Burgundy. But as you note both are feasible.
To me, Burgundy tends to be boring with its sameness. Provence has something different around every corner.
Provence is best is spring and fall when you can avoid the summer crowds. You still have the incredible luminosity and variety of activities. Burgundy is best during the summer when flowers are in bloom, concerts and exhibits are planned everywhere, and you can enjoy the villages, towns, rivers and canals. I hope that helps.
We just returned from 2 weeks in Provence and had a great time. Even with 2 weeks, there was much to do and see. The markets are fun. We stayed near St. Remy and I recommend it as a centrally located area to day trip from.
Both are very nice, but having been to both Provence has the most to offer.
How are you traveling -- the distances are long, for example about five hours or so between Sarlat and Beaune or Sarlat and Arles.
I could see going to the Dordogne, then a night or two in Carcassonne (with a drive to the Cathar castles which are awesome on the second day), then on to Provence from there. That would make the transition between stops relatively pain free, if you do decide on Provence.
The Dordogne is a great choice, BTW.
