Help needed! I was about to book a trip (8 days)exploring Aix, Avignon and Arles and wondered why not head east to Nice and surrounding Villages on the Cote d'Azur? We want a quite place on the sea, it seems that Nice may be a better choice.
Any suggestions on how to decide?
Good morning, David! First, into what city are you flying? When are you going? Then what do you want to see? If you want a "quiet" place on the sea, something in Nice, along the coast east to Marseilles would be good or even in the Camargue. There are many choices in Nice and you can always use HomeAway or VRBO to find an apartment. We had looked at several apartments in Nice. If you want to see the sights in Arles, Avignon, or Aix, you are looking at land-locked areas but within a somewhat short driving distance to the sea. The real issue is what you want to do and see. It is possible to break up your trip but that involved lots of travelling. What form of transportation are you using? If you want to send me a private message, I can provide more specifics for you. Otherwise, I am sure many others will respond later. Everyone has opinions and information.
I always think of this are as two separate regions, though technically they are not. The Rhone Valley and Luberon area are classic Provence, a dry inland area with Roman antiquities, olive trees, and lavender. The Cote d'Azure is more maritime. They are about 3 hours apart, so it's impractical to visit both from the same base. So if you want to see both, plan on shifting where you stay.
