Provence in February

Has anyone travelled to Provence in January or February? We had a great trip to Tuscany in Feb. 2008 and liked the fact that there were very few tourists, the hotels were cheaper and we could get a table at any resturant we wanted. So we were thinking about Provence but all I keep thinking about is Peter Mayle's description of the Mistral winds in the winter. So, would this be a really bad time to go? We don't mind cold weather, just don't want to be in bitterly cold, blusterly weather where we never want to leave the hotel room.

Here's Rick on that (from his book):

"Provence is famous for its bone-chilling winters when the wind blows. Winter travel is OK in Nice and Avignon, but you'll find smaller cities and villages buttoned up tight."
