My teen daughter and I have 5 days to spend in the Provence area the week before Christmas. Any suggestions as to what to visit? We will be heading east thru Provence to Italy. thanks!
In order to help you can you let us know you have looked at and what sort of things you like to do? Have you studied any guidebooks? The Rick Steves France or Provence Guidebook have loads of suggestions, both for things to see and places to stay and eat. The Michelin Green Books for the same areas have really good information about many towns and cities and also driving tours. Are you driving or using the trains?
I have only looked at the Lonely Planet Guide book--will also check out Rick Steve's. We have not yet decided whether to rent a car or take public transportation. We like to get a sense of the local culture--people and food. We enjoy checking out the 'hot' spots--but also the quiet found in the country.
Provence was on my itinerary this year as a possible trip. I travel, typically leaving on Thanksgiving and return 17 days after. So in my research, using Rick Steves' guidebook, I found that most of the smaller towns that I was dying to go to, where simply shut down during that time of year. It seems that October is the final month of operation for Provence. All the biggies are still in effect, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, but all the cool, quaint, smaller towns, seem to be ghost towns. So, I am going to Belgium instead.
